My apartment in Isla is awesome. There is a living room/kitchen area with sliding glass doors which open out onto a balcony. The balcony faces the ocean which is about 100 yards away at most. This is the rocky side of the island, the windy side too, which is both a blessing and a curse. I spend a lot of time on the balcony just staring at the waves.
Downstairs there is a huge space that I am allowed to use as studio space even though it's not part of my apartment. I am blessed with an amazing landlady (Pia) who allows me to do this.
There is a separate bedroom which now has air conditioning which is seldom needed but is great to have so I can close the windows and doors and not hear the dogs that bark outside all the time.
On Isla, in many neighborhoods, everything is open and fairly close together so there is a fair amount of generalized noise: radios, kids playing, people talking, scooters driving by. You would think that because I'm very hearing impaired this wouldn't be a problem but... you would be wrong. The general noise is fine but then there are the dogs: so many dogs.... loud, obnoxious, barking, ferrel and domesticated… whatever... dogs everywhere.
The ferrel dogs come around and the domesticated dogs, doing their job, start to bark at the outsiders. They do this all the time. They do this at 3am, often. Despite my hearing loss I can hear dogs through closed windows WITH earplugs in and a fan on. It sucks and it makes me really aggressive and angry and I pretty much just want to kill every dog I see or hear. I actually LIKE dogs but I can't stand the barking thing. The A/C situation really improved this problem as I was able to close not only the windows but the doors as well and still not swelter.
Here are some Isla dogs I really like. They don't even bother to chase me on my bike. It's too much bother to get up.
